The conversion of Saul in the Bible is a powerful example of a transformative “lightbulb moment” with God. Saul, both literally and figuratively, received renewed sight.

In Acts 22:12-13 we read Paul’s account of what happened after he was blinded by the light of Jesus on the road to Damascus:

“A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him.”

Acts 22:12-13, New International Version

Once a persecutor of those who followed Jesus, Saul encountered the living Jesus. This led to a profound change that included renewed sight and a new name, Paul, bestowed by God. Most of us in our lifetimes will not have such an encounter, but it’s the small “ah-ha!” moments along the way that can have a profound impact on our lives.

Just as we recognize a friend’s voice in a crowded room, we can recognized God’s voice as we spend more time with His words in the Bible. By actively seeking His guidance, leaning into the Holy Spirit for direction, and being attentive to His voice, we can navigate life’s challenges with clarity and understanding.

Picture yourself deciding to plan a road trip for your upcoming vacation. You opt to explore the country by car instead of flying. You unfold an old map of the state, locate your home city and trace the route to your destination a few hundred miles away. Now, the real challenge begins.

As you look on the map, you realize there are numerous routes that would lead to a miserable journey. They’re too long with too many traps and detours. However, one path stands out as the clearest and most efficient. With this understanding, you avoid every wrong turn.

In the same way, God illuminates your path. Yet, unlike a map, only He knows your ultimate destination and the best route to take. His Word serves as the most reliable guide for your journey. It lights your way and steers you along the truest course.

Father God, You have led me faithfully throughout so many seasons of my life. I give You thanks for the ways You have restored my sight and given life to my spiritual eyes, that I might walk in the path You’ve ordained for me. Thank You for the many “lightbulb moments” You have given me. Please continue to lead me by illuminating my path and give me the grace to walk in that way. I love You, Lord! Amen

Like Saul, we can allow God to give us spiritual clarity and renewal in our lives. By reflecting on God’s Word, centering our hearts on Him, and asking for guidance, we can receive His direction. God gave Saul renewed sight spiritually as He revealed Jesus to him. Ask God to restore your spiritual sight so that you might see Him more clearly.
